Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to build modern abattoirs at three locations in the city including the one which is coming up at Gadkan mouza.
The BMC has decided to prevent slaughter of goats and sheep in public and to process the work in a scientific manner. There would be chopping tools, a boiler, washing platforms, drainage system and waste-treatment plant.
The meat would be brought to the market for sale after being certified healthy by a veterinarian for consumption.
According to reports, the modern abattoir at Gadkan will have the capacity to handle 30,000 kilograms of meat per annum.
The civic body had authorized construction of the ongoing abattoir to the National Buildings Construction Corporation. Sources said the agreement was signed in February 2015 but it has not been completed yet as there were some issues in land allotment.
The proposed abattoirs would come up over one acre land each. The decision has been taken at the meeting of corporators here Tuesday.
The civic body has also decide to hire an agency to manage all colony parks in the city. Currently, BMC controls 20 colony parks in the city.
The Bhubaneswar Development Authority will also hand over the parks to BMC for maintenance. BMC’s environment officer will constitute a committee to execute the work.
According to BMC sources, the corporators have been demanding regular clearance of garbage/ building material and debris. The civic body, however, has decided to launch a special drive to clear all conservancy lanes.
The Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO) had given a presentation on the existing structure of piped drinking water at the meeting. BMC Commissioner Krishna Kumar directed his officials to expedite pending work of all piped water projects.
