New Delhi, June 2: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formally issued the letter of permission (LoP) to the state government for starting MBBS course at the newly-opened Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the ministry has given consent to start 100-seat MBBS course at the medical college. In the letter the ministry said, “We are directed to convey the formal permission of the Central government in the name of Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital with an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats for the academic year 2017-18.”
The letter further said, “This permission of the Central government is accorded initially for one year and will be renewed on yearly basis subject to verification of annual targets. The process of renewal of permission will continue till the infrastructure and expansion of hospital facilities are completed as per norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI).”
Earlier, the state government had applied for obtaining LoP for the two medical colleges—Koraput and Baripada medical college. While Koraput medical college got the permission from the Centre, the matter related to Baripada medical college is still hangs in balance. However, the Centre has recently given a reprieve and asked the MCI team for another round of inspection.
The MCI team earlier in December last year had inspected the infrastructure of the proposed medical in Baripada and Koraput and submitted its report to the ministry. The addition of new MBBS seats is likely to give an impetus to the medical education in the state which is grappling with dearth of medical colleges and qualified doctors. PNN
