Bhubaneswar, June 19: The city observed ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ organised by Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) in collaboration with Help Age India and Senior Citizen Associations of the state at Rabindra Mandap here Monday. Attending the event as chief guest, WCD & Mission Shakti, SSEPD & MSME minister Prafulla Samal, stated that Orissa is among the state that reaches out to highest number of vulnerable people through its Pension Scheme. “Old age pension is being paid by the government to needy senior citizens for their sustenance,” the minister said. Exhorting people to respect their elders, he focused on family value system to curb abuse of the elderly. Principal Secretary, SSEPD department Niten Chandra, discussed about various programmes being undertaken by the department for senior citizens. The commissioner
of Police Y B Khurania spoke about commitment of police in the twin cities towards the safety and security of the Senior Citizens. Recently Help Age India released a survey report for 19 cities to understand how elders are treated
in the public spaces across the nation. State head –Help Age India, Bharati Chakra, discussed about the study findings in detail. “As per the study, 53% elders feel discriminated, 61percent elders feel that people get impatient with them, since they are slow, where as 52 percent elders feel, people are ruder to them if they are not well dressed. Help Age’s campaign to ‘Stop Ageism’ is aimed at sensitizing people and making them aware of their own treatment towards elders.” About 300 Senior Citizens from various senior citizen associations attended the programme. The pro
gramme ended with a note that all sections of the community including children, youth and elderly need to come forward to pay attention to the issues of senior citizens and help them lead a secure and dignified life.
