Maha Shivratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva, is observed annually on the 14th night of the Phalgun month, according to the Hindu calendar. This typically falls between February and March in the Gregorian calendar.
The term ‘Maha Shivratri’ translates to ‘the great night of Shiva’ and several legends are associated with this sacred occasion. One popular belief is that Lord Shiva performed the ‘Tandava’—the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction—on this night. Another widely held tradition states that it marks the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, signifying the eternal bond of masculine and feminine energies.
On this auspicious day, devotees begin their morning with a ritual bath, wear clean clothes, and observe a fast while engaging in meditation and mantra chanting, particularly “Om Namah Shivaya,” to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings for spiritual growth and inner purification. Many visit Shiva temples to perform ‘Rudrabhishek’, a sacred offering of milk, honey, fruits, and bilva (bel) leaves to the ‘Shivlinga’.
