Berhampur: A doctor of MKCG Medical College and Hospital here has been accused of negligence and unauthorised referral of a patient to a private nursing home, resulting in the patient’s death following a botched surgery.
The deceased, Balaram Gouda, 28, son of Ramesh Gouda, hailed from Baghalati village under Golanthara police limits in Ganjam district. He was reportedly injured in a bike accident July 10 and brought to MKCG by locals in an ambulance. After being admitted to the casualty ward, Balaram came under the care of senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dilip Pradhan. According to the complaint, Dr Pradhan allegedly told the family that Balaram’s condition was serious and that the hospital lacked adequate facilities. He reportedly assured them that Balaram would recover in just two days if treated at a private hospital in Goilundi. Acting on his advice, the family shifted Balaram to Binayak Hospital. Surgery was performed July 13 at the private clinic.
However, his condition worsened during the procedure. The hospital staff then suggested referring him to a Bhubaneswar facility. Family members were denied access to him during this time. While being transported in an ambulance, a paramedic accompanying Balaram declared him dead. Balaram’s brother Jagannath Gouda later complained to MKCG authorities, accusing Dr Pradhan of gross medical negligence and financial misconduct. Based on the complaint, a police case (352/25) was registered at Baidyanathpur police station. Dr Pradhan is reportedly absconding and unreachable, with his phone switched off, according to police sources.

MKCG Dean and Principal Dr Suchitra Dash assured a thorough investigation and strict action against those found guilty. “We are taking the matter seriously and will act based on the findings,” she said. Ganjam SP Saravana Vivek M confirmed he has been briefed on the case. “Detailed inquiries will be conducted and necessary action will follow,” he added.
