Bolangir/Patnagarh: A 19-year-old woman was critically injured and left fighting for her life after her boyfriend allegedly slit her throat and later reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in Bolangir district early Friday morning.
The incident occurred in Mayabarha village under Bolangir Sadar police limits. According to police, 25-year-old Haldhar Bari visited the home of his romantic partner, whose family members welcomed him. After dinner, he stayed overnight at the house. Early Friday, while the woman’s mother went out to fetch water, Bari allegedly attacked her with a sharp knife, slitting her throat, and fled.
The critically injured woman was rushed to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir by an ambulance. Due to the severity of her condition, she was later transferred to VIMSAR at Burla for advanced treatment. On the other hand, Bari reportedly returned to his village Pandripani and consumed poison in an apparent suicide attempt. Villagers discovered him in a critical state and took him first to Patnagarh sub-divisional hospital and then to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir.

He was also transferred subsequently to VIMSAR for specialised care. Police said the motive behind the attack is unclear, but preliminary investigation suggests it may be related to a love affair. The woman’s father has filed a complaint at Bolangir Sadar police station, and authorities have launched an inquiry.
