Bhubaneswar: Odisha has unveiled 15 new horticulture crop varieties based on the recommendation of the State Seed Sub-Committee, chaired by Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment department Principal Secretary Arabinda Kumar Padhee, official sources said Saturday.
The screening committee recommended varieties from multiple institutions. Eight (Chilli, brinjal, amaranthus, tomato, cashew, mango ginger, black turmeric, and potato) were from OUAT, two (sweet potato and yam bean) were from CTCRI, and five (rose apple, three types of amaranthus, and brinjal) were from CHES.
All these varieties were officially released Saturday.
Notably, the rose apple variety developed by the Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES) is being released for the first time in India.
Similarly, the black turmeric, also called OUAT Kalinga Black Turmeric-1, is valued for its medicinal properties.
The potato variety developed by OUAT, known as Kalinga Baby Potato (Phulbani Aloo), is celebrated for its unique taste.
