Sundargarh: Agriculture, the backbone of Sundargarh’s predominantly tribal population, is witnessing a new chapter with the introduction of aromatic and non-aromatic paddy cultivation by adopting organic methods.
Earlier, farmers used chemical fertilisers and pesticides for a good harvest. However, these fertilisers and pesticides did more harm to the crops than increasing the yield. This prompted the state government to roll out this initiative to enhance farmers’ income while promoting natural and organic methods of farming.
The new method of cultivation has so far been undertaken on 5,300 hectares of land across Lephripara, Balisankara, Bargaon, Rajgangpur, Subdega, Bonaigarh, and Gurundia blocks. This year, an additional 2,000 hectares in Sundargarh Sadar and Tangarpali blocks have also come under organic farming.

Under the programme, farmers are provided with seeds, organic fertilisers, and financial incentives. In the first year, each farmer receives 18 kg seeds and Rs 5,000 per hectare; in the second year, 10 kg seeds and Rs 4,000; and in the third year, 8 kg seeds along with Rs 3,500. To further secure farmer incomes, procurement is assured at a minimum support price of Rs 4,100 per quintal.
Traditional aromatic varieties such as Kala Champa, Ketaki, Juhi, Badshah Bhog, Sugandha, and Geetanjali are being cultivated under this scheme.
Implementation is being carried out through Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) under close supervision of chief district agriculture officer Lalbihari Mallik. He, along with departmental officials, has been conducting frequent field visits to encourage farmers and assess ground realities.
During his inspection at Pithabhui, he interacted with cultivators and expressed optimism that favourable climatic conditions this year would result in an excellent yield. He also urged farmers to make the most of the scheme and ensure its benefits are passed on to future generations.
With growing enthusiasm among farmers and the continuous guidance of agriculture officials, Sundargarh is poised to script a new horizon in organic paddy cultivation through this innovative blend of tradition and sustainability.
