Bhubaneswar, August 17: A tattoo art festival that opened Independence Day and ended the next provided body art lovers a delectable feast for the eyes. ‘Mystery Canvas-Freedom is Art’, organised by SKIVAS, brought tattoo artists of national renown under one roof. The festival this year was themed Mystery Canvas, in which the mystery signifies that the artist does not know who he is inking and the person getting the tattoo done doesn’t know who the artist is. It gave the artist complete freedom to ink tattoos of his or her choice on the bodies, Om Acharya, the tattoo artist who organized the event said. According to Om, the tattoo festival was aimed at promoting body art. “We organized this festival for young artists who have chosen to become tattoo artists by breaking barriers society had raised. Renowned tattoo artists such as Niloy Das and Amin Sultan were part of the festival,”
Om said. More than 200 people got tattoos done at the festival. Satish a disc jockey said he got ‘India’ tattooed on his arm to mark Independence Day . Om said tattoos were catching onin a big way across the state. “It is nothing new as our grandmothers used to tattoo their husbands’ names on their bodies,” he said. Amin Sultan, one of the tattoo artists at the event, has celebrities among his clientele, including the likes of badminton player Jwala Gutta and actress Roja. He has also participated in international events. “Art speaks where words fail. People today have become more liberal and open minded. In Bhubaneswar I found many willing to get inked which is encouraging for artists like me,” Amin said. He wants tattoo artists to try new concepts in the art.
