Out of 17,13,821 students covered during 2016-17, 9,84,062 students were mainstreamed
Bhubaneswar: Encouraged with the achievement made through its Ujjwal programme last year, the state government has asked district education officers (DEOs) to identify fresh students to be covered under the programme for 2017-18.
In a bid to ensure minimum learning achievement levels among students of Class I to VIII in Oriya, English and Mathematics in government schools, the state government had launched the Ujjwal scheme in April last year. The objective of the scheme was to enhance learning and performance level of students and teachers respectively in primary schools.
Out of 17,13,821 students covered under the scheme during 2016-17, the government succeeded to mainstream 9,84,062 students in their age at appropriate classes, official sources said Sunday.
The school and mass education secretary Ranjana Chopra has asked the district education officers (DEOs), district project coordinators (DPCs) and block education officers (BEOs) to identify school children without basic competencies and report to the government.
All students studying in Class I and II must possess the basic learning, Chopra said, adding, “In case this was not done, action should be initiated against the teachers of these classes and all BEOs should report the action taken.”
The BEOs are further asked to ensure all Class I and II students are equipped with basic reading and writing skills before October 31.
The Class III to VI students, who are unable to read and write alphabets/numerals, would be seated in a separate class under a dedicated teacher. These students would also be mainstreamed by October end, the sources said.
Similarly, such students of Class VII and VIII would be paired with their friend (classmate), who knows the basic learning. The mentor students would be called as ‘Bidya Bandhu’, the officials said.
The government has asked the officials not to admit children with special needs and long absentee students in the Ujjwal classes. The Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators (CRCCs) have been instructed to declare at least one school in their cluster as “no Ujjwal student school” by September 5 this year.
