Puri: The transgender association in the district Monday staged a protest in front of the office of superintendent of police Sarthak Sarangi demanding their inclusion in state’s welfare schemes.
Hundreds of transgenders led by association president Devaki Kinnar held a demonstration in front of the SP’s office and submitted a memorandum to collector Arvind Agarwal.
The community members sought issuance of Aadhaar cards, ration cards and voter identity cards. Besides, they demanded land for landless transgenders.
“In other states, the governments are providing several facilities to transgenders. Although the Orissa government has recognised us as third genders following the ruling of the Supreme Court, we do not get any government benefits. There are many highly qualified members in our community. However, the state government does not engage us in jobs though there are vacancies in various departments,” Devaki said.
“There are more than 500 transgenders in the district, but none of them has own houses. They are leading miserable life along road, footpath and on the beach. The state government is providing houses to landless people under Mo Kudia Yojana. We demand our inclusion in the housing scheme,” Devaki added.
