Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) is set to further strengthen its traction power infrastructure by upgrading the existing 1×25 KV overhead electrification (OHE) system to an advanced 2×25 KV system in the Singapur Road–Titlagarh section, covering the Titlagarh–Badmal and Titlagarh–Muribahal triple line sections under Sambalpur Division.
The project, spanning 153 Route Kilometres (RKM) and 575 Track Kilometres (TKM), is estimated to cost Rs 465.47 crore. It is part of a major Railway Board initiative to upgrade electric traction systems across Indian Railways, with a nationwide allocation of around Rs 12,000 crore aimed at strengthening power supply infrastructure and enhancing the capacity of electrified routes.
The 2×25 KV traction system is an advanced electrification setup that transmits power at 50 KV and supplies 25 KV to trains via autotransformers installed at regular intervals. This configuration ensures stable voltage, reduces power losses, and enhances the overall efficiency of electric locomotives.

The upgraded system will support seamless operation of semi-high-speed passenger trains and heavy freight trains, improving reliability, hauling capacity, and reducing maintenance requirements. The Singapur Road–Titlagarh corridor is a key freight route under ECoR, vital for transporting minerals, coal, and other essential commodities.
Upgrading to the 2×25 KV system will boost the section’s hauling capacity, ensure better voltage regulation, and support future growth in both passenger and freight traffic. The system will also enhance energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, aligning with Indian Railways’ vision of greener and more efficient transport solutions.
The initiative reaffirms Indian Railways’ commitment to building a modern, high-capacity, and sustainable rail network. Its implementation will enable ECoR to further enhance efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly train operations, contributing to national progress and infrastructure modernisation.
