While two of the deceased were identified as Surendra Kumar Sahu (30) of Dansar village in Banki block of Cuttack and Surya Narayan Sahu (35) of Harirajpur, the identity of another deceased was not immediately known.

Town police got the post-mortem conducted of the two bodies and handed them over to the family members while the third body was kept for identification. The post-mortem of the body will be conducted Tuesday. “A case was registered and the two vehicles were seized. Further investigation is underway,” police said.

Among the 15 injured admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Khurda, four critically injured were shifted to Bhubaneswar.

According to sources, the mini bus (OR02B738) carrying 35 passengers was heading to Banki from Bhubaneswar when the oil tanker (OD15A1115) coming from Nayagarh collided head-on at 8.45am. Both the vehicles skidded off the road and fell 5 feet into a paddy field after the collision.

Three of the passengers died on the spot. The locals rushed to rescue the passengers trapped in the bus and admitted them to the district headquarters hospital. Some passengers who suffered minor injuries returned home after preliminary treatment.

In the second incident, a 25 year-old youth was killed by a speeding bus at Kandarpur on Cuttack-Paradip highway here Monday afternoon.

Police said the mishap occurred around 2.15pm when the bus (OD-05-Z-8109) was on its way to Sankheswar in Paradip from Cuttack. The victim, who was waiting to board a bus, was hit by the speeding bus. Locals spotted him in a pool of blood and rushed him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Kandarpur police reached the spot and arrested the bus driver identified as Braja Kishore Behera. “A case (100/17) was registered and efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the youth,” police said.

The bus driver claimed that the youth tried to board the speeding bus. ”He took hold of the bus door following which he was dragged for a few metres on the concrete road,” Behera said.

The mishap occurred around 4.30am when Geeta Bhoi, a resident of Mangala Sahi under Chandanpur police limits, was on her way home after relieving herself. A speeding Bhubaneswar-bound car hit Geeta from behind leading to her death on the spot. Enraged villagers burnt tyres and blocked the NH for over four hours demanding compensation for the bereaved family and arrest of the car driver. The agitation was withdrawn after additional tehsildar and top Puri cops reached the spot and assured of adequate compensation and arrest of the car driver.
