New Delhi: Odisha’s semiconductor ambitions received a signifi cant boost at SEMICON India 2026, with the three-day global technology event emerging as an important platform for the State to showcase its growing capabilities, attract fresh investments and position itself as an emerging destination for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing in eastern India.
From investment proposals worth Rs 23,600 crore with the potential to generate around 6,100 employment opportunities to the proposed 870-acre semiconductor and electronics manufacturing cluster at Naraj, Odisha used the fi fth edition of SEMICON India to underline its readiness to move beyond intent and build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem.
The event, held at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi from September 17 to 19, brought together global semiconductor companies, technology fi rms, policymakers and research institutions. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while highlighting India’s next phase of semiconductor development, said Odisha has huge potential in the sector and that more investments are expected to come to the state in the days ahead.
“Odisha has a huge potential in the semiconductor sector and more investment is coming in the days ahead,” Vaishnaw said, while highlighting the state’s emerging capabilities in advanced semiconductor packaging.
He also pointed to the 3D packaging unit coming up in Odisha, signalling the state’s growing role in advanced packaging. One of the notable moments for Odisha at SEMICON India was the showcasing of an indigenous semiconductor chip designed by NIT Rourkela among the Made-in-India chips displayed at the event. The chip was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of the event, putting Odisha’s indigenous chip-design capabilities on a national and international platform.
The participation of NIT Rourkela and PMEC, Berhampur, at the Odisha Pavilion also highlighted another important dimension of the state’s semiconductor strategy — developing talent and indigenous design capabilities alongside manufacturing. The state’s presence at SEMICON India was backed by a series of high-level meetings between the Odisha government and leading global and Indian technology companies.
A delegation led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held discussions with semiconductor and technology companies as well as delegations from Japan, Sweden and Taiwan. The Chief Minister and his team also engaged with companies including Lam Research, Applied Materials, SiCSem, 3D Glass Solutions, Cyient, Linde and HORIBA India. The engagements resulted in investment proposals totalling Rs 23,600 crore, with the potential to create around 6,100 jobs.
At the heart of Odisha’s semiconductor vision is the proposed 870-acre semiconductor and electronics manufacturing cluster at Naraj. Majhi described the proposed cluster as the “Odisha Silicon Valley”, refl ecting the government’s ambition to create a concentrated ecosystem for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, innovation and supporting industries.
The State has also been pursuing investments across areas such as silicon carbide, advanced packaging, glass-substrate packaging, memory-module assembly and power electronics, with applications spanning electric vehicles, railways, defence and energy.
