Brahmapur: Odisha Police Sunday arrested 13 people, including five women, in connection with their alleged involvement in attacking a village in Ganjam district September 14, an officer said. Raids were conducted in Kukudakhandi village under Brahmapur Sadar police station limits Sunday morning, and the accused persons were arrested, said Brahmapur SP Abhinav Sonkar.
They were charged with sections of BNS dealing with mob violence, illegal confinement, obstructing police personnel and damage to government property.
Stringent action would be taken against those indulging in mob violence and obstructing the police, the SP said. According to the police, a group of 8-10 people, armed with deadly weapons, including swords, entered Kuku dakhandi Bauri Sahi on motorcycles on the afternoon of September 14 and hurled bombs, creating terror in the area.
Locals caught hold of two of the gang along with two motorcycles. Previous enmity might be the cause of the incident, the police said after preliminary investigation. One of them was severely assaulted while the other was confined inside the community room. Upon receiving information, a police team reached the village.
A mob, however, obstructed the police in discharging their duty, pelted them with stones, damaging vehicles, and abused the personnel, said another police officer. One victim remained confi ned inside the community room under lock until 2am, he said.
Later, senior officers along with additional police force and the executive magistrate of Kukudakhandi, intervened, rescued the confined person and shifted him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. The police registered a case in this regard September 15 and launched an investigation
