Kendujhar: An 11- kV power line passing over a primary school, Anganwadi centre (AWC) and Kalika Centre at Ambadali village under Nayakote panchayat in Banspal block of Kendujhar district has raised safety concerns among students, teachers and parents.
The overhead live wires frequently cause sparks after coming into contact with tree branches and leaves on the school and Anganwadi centre premises.
Fearing that the situation could lead to a major accident at any moment, residents have demanded immediate corrective measures.
The high-voltage wires pass directly over the school and Anganwadi centre. When strong winds blow, branches rub against the wires, often creating sparks and even flames.
A few days ago, intense sparking reportedly caused flames, prompting parents to keep their children away from the Kalika Centre. As a result, the centre remained closed that day, said worker Chemana Potuar.
Parents are still reportedly reluctant to send their children to the school and Anganwadi centre because of the danger.
There are also complaints that leakage current can be felt from the wires during rainfall, raising further concerns over the safety of young children, teachers and Anganwadi workers.
Although the matter has been brought to the attention of the block administration, no steps have been taken to relocate the power line.
