India’s three-front vulnerability

A missile fired from Yemen, a highway disrupted in Manipur and a rise in petrol prices may appear to be separate developments. Yet all three expose India’s vulnerabilities in an increasingly unstable world. The Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia threaten energy supplies and international shipping. Renewed violence in Manipur disrupts civilian life and transport in the northeast. Meanwhile, rising oil price, inflationary pressures and expensive credit are narrowing the room available to households, businesses and the government.

The crises are not directly connected, nor should their causes be confused. But their consequences converge on one central question: how resilient is India when external shocks collide with internal instability and economic pressures? Wholesale inflation rises by 11.39% and retail consumer index (CPI) rose to 5.54% in September 2026.

Can Odisha master disaster economics?

Yemen’s Houthis have shown how a non-state group can threaten vital infrastructure without a major power’s military strength. Missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets have heightened fears over oil supplies and shipping. On October 13, Saudi Arabia struck Houthi-held oil facilities near Sanaa, while the Houthis targeted Dhahran, home to Saudi Aramco’s headquarters, escalating energy security concerns.

For India, the danger extends beyond the conflict. Threats to the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait can force ships onto longer routes, raising freight, fuel and insurance costs. Brent crude reached $106.58 a barrel on October 14. For India, which imports most of its crude, higher prices enlarge the import bill, increase dollar demand and pressure the rupee, adding to foreign-exchange strain.

At home, Manipur presents a different but equally serious challenge. The state’s continuing insecurity has moved beyond the earlier Meitei-Kuki conflict into fresh violence involving Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in the hill districts. The renewed clashes show how local disputes, retaliatory attacks and unresolved grievances can create repeated cycles of violence. Manipur’s economic vulnerability is magnified by geography. As a landlocked state, it relies heavily on road links to bring in food, fuel, medicines, construction materials and other essentials.  The national significance is greater than the state’s size might suggest. Manipur is part of India’s strategic northeast and lies along the country’s intended connectivity corridor towards Southeast Asia. Persistent violence weakens confidence, deters investment and delays the development of trade, tourism and local enterprise.

India’s economic challenge is not necessarily a collapse, but the shrinking margin for absorbing further shocks. The economy continues to grow, yet rising energy costs, inflation weaken household purchasing power, squeeze businesses and complicate monetary policy.

India cannot control Houthi missile attacks or resolve Manipur’s conflicts through economic policy alone. It can, however, strengthen its capacity to withstand their consequences in the northeast. In Manipur, security operations must be accompanied by credible political dialogue, impartial law enforcement and sustained efforts to protect all communities. Recurring violence will continue to undermine development. At the national level, economic policy must pay greater attention to purchasing power, employment, small businesses and the uneven impact of inflation.

The lesson from these three fronts is not that India faces an inevitable economic breakdown. It is that resilience cannot be measured by GDP growth alone.  India must reduce vulnerabilities at home and abroad.

A missile in the Gulf can raise India’s fuel bill; a blocked highway in Manipur can raise the cost of essentials. Both reveal how insecurity reaches ordinary people. India must diversify energy supplies, secure trade routes, restore peace in Manipur and protect household purchasing power. Strategic strength means little if distant wars and domestic violence combine to make everyday life more expensive and uncertain.
