Raisuan: The government spends crores of rupees under Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan (SSA) to improve primary education in the state by making it free and through free supply of MDM, text books, dress and bi-cycles. However, all such efforts have turned ineffective in certain tribal pockets of Keonjhar.
Salarapentha village in Mahadeijoda panchayat under sadar block is a case in point. Many conscious citizens in the area said hundreds of kids were seen dropping their studies and working in construction work, hotels and road-side eateries as helpers in tractors, and tending cattle in Salarapentha village.
Over 600 people live in the village, but most of them are poor and lead miserable life in the absence of good livelihood opportunities. Though the village has a primary school, it has failed to attract students.
Several children of the village have dropped out and are engaged in various work.
Puja Pentai, Nundurai Pentai, Khaira Pentai, Ratani Pentai, , Tukuma Pentai, , Bhaskar Pentai, , Prafulla Pentai, Kamala Nayak, Lata Pentai, Kalu Pentai, Sukru Pentai and Basant Pentai are among the children who have dropped out.
Locals demanded the administration ensure that the kids are attracted to the school. PNN
