Puri: The adage ‘where there is a will there is a way’ has come true for a Balasore man, who devoted himself to chariot construction despite being an outsider to the servitors’ community.
Rasanand Bindhani (44), a welder from Nuapadhi near Remuna in Balasore district, has not only helped in chariot construction but also donated a specially-designed cart and a drilling machine to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
Bindhani claims that carpenters can use the cart for hassle-free transportation of logs at Rath Yard. Besides, the drilling machine will come handy for making holes on woods while building the chariots.
Bindhani, who runs a welding shop at his native village, was fascinated with chariot making during his visit to the Holy City in 2012. “I had visited the Rath Yard to observe chariot making after paying obeisance to the Srimandir deities. I had expressed my desire before one of the servitors to participate in chariot construction. He accepted my proposal as two blacksmith servitors were absent on that day,” Bindhani claims.
According to Bindhani, an SJTA official had called him over phone and asked him to participate in chariot making for 2013 car festival. “I had helped the carpenters at Rath Yard for 21 days in 2013 and participated in chariot making the next year too. I witnessed the problems faced by Bhoi servitors in shifting the large logs while working at Rath Yard. This prompted me to prepare a special cart to make the process hassle-free and I accomplished the task in 2015,” says Bindhani.
The Remuna-based welder had designed a drilling machine for chariot construction in 2016. “Making of the cart and drilling machine was possible only due to the blessings of Lord Jagannath. I will continue my support to the carpenters at Rath Yard till my last breath,” Bindhani says.
