Cuttack: Jails are supposed to be places that offer no luxuries for inmates accused or convicted of various crimes. But not so for all inmates lodged in jails. At Choudwar Circle Jail, some high-profile prisoners are reportedly enjoying several amenities with unmistakable touches of luxury.
Some prisoners of this jail are allegedly getting facilities that other prisoners can only dream of. A divisional forest officer (DFO) arrested on charges of amassing disproportionate assets and lodged in this jail is kept in a hospital on the jail premises mainly because beds are readily available there for inmates having health complications, said sources.
Some other influential prisoners like gangster siblings Sushant Dhalasamanta and Sushil Dhalasamanta have the privilege of delicious breakfast obtained from outside, added the sources.
Choudwar Circle Jail earlier earned infamy after inspections led to the recovery of liquor, ganja, gutkha, mobile phones and even weapons from the jail.
Sources said DFO Sudhanshu Mishra, arrested by vigilance sleuths for allegedly amassing assets of RS 6 crore, has been allowed to stay in the jail hospital without any health complication.
Similarly, Laxmidhar Das, an SCBMCH professor arrested on charges of sexually harassing a student, has been staying in the jail hospital since his arrest.
The jail authorities have reportedly allowed realtor Gaya Jena, arrested in connection with several fraud cases, and Yuga Prasad Kanungo, nabbed for his alleged links with the Dhalasamanta siblings, to stay in the hospital.
The Dhalasamanta brothers, lodged in two separate cells in the jail, are reportedly getting their favourite breakfast from outside.
Sources said the commissionerate police have initiated a probe to find out how the criminal siblings manage to get breakfast from outside.
Jail superintendent Niranajan Das maintained that prisoners are placed in the jail hospital only on the advice of doctors who examine their health conditions.
