Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Railways A are leading with nine points each after the end of fifth round in the 36th National Team Chess Championships at KIIT School of Law here Thursday. Tamil Nadu B and Air India are following the leaders with eight points each.
In the women’s event, top seeded PSPB won all their matches and are leading the pack with eight points from four rounds. In a crucial encounter on the first board between PSPB and Air India the former won 2.5:1.5 pointys. The last game of the day saw an exciting battle between IM Padmini Rout and Vijayalakshmi. The latter had an extra pawn on the board after 67 moves, but Padmini forced a draw in 108 moves.
Meanwhile in another match, WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty of LIC scored the lone win for her team. She outwitted Arya Usha of Bihar.
Hosts thrash Telangana
Orissa men’s team entered the semifinals of the 26th Junior National baseball championships after thrashing Telangana 10-0 in the quarterfinal at the Kalinga Stadium here Thursday.
Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi also made it to the last four stage. Chandigarh triumphed over Maharashtra 8-3, Chhattisgarh drubbed Jammu & Kashmir 13-0 while Delhi pummeled Andhra Pradesh 15-1.
Meanwhile Orissa eves finished fourth after suffering a 3-13 thrashing against Telangana in the third and fourth play-off match.
OUFC win
OUFC, Cuttack scraped past Padmapur 3-1 in a match of the Bacchan Memorial football tournament at Tigiria in Cuttack, Thursday. Mahesh Singh (eighth, 40th) scored a brace for the winning team, while Bikash Sahu (16th) found the back of the net once. Riyan Khan scored the only goal for Padmapur in the sixth minute.
Orissa eliminated
Orissa were eliminated from the National Sub-Junior girls’ hockey championship despite of a resounding 10-1 victory against Chhattisgarh in their last league match at Rohtak, Thursday.
Bimala Barwa scored four goals including a hat-trick to help Orissa register the emphatic win. Mukti Soren scored a brace, while Akina Kujjur, Sarita Kerketa, Priyanka Kujjur and Mamata Kindio struck once each.
