Bargarh/Biramaharajpur/Bheden, Nov 2: Police late Sunday night arrested Sushil Kumar Nayak, then officer-in-charge (OIC) of Bheden police station and suspected to be the prime accused of the sensational Makhnu Bag murder of Dekulaba village under Bheden police limits in Bargarh district.
The accused police officer was arrested from Bargarh Town police station premises, Biramaharajpur sub-divisional police officer Prasanna Biswal said. Nayak was produced in a Biramaharajpur court and later sent to the sub-jail following the rejection of his bail petition. A case was registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
On the other hand, it was alleged that some more police officials are involved in the case as Nayak was arrested from the police station premises itself. Top police officials have not been brought under the scope of investigation, Makhnu’s younger son Biju Monday said during a press meet held at Purohit Bhawan in Bargarh demanding a CBI probe into the incident.
Earlier, sub-inspector Soumyaranjan Patra, ASI Pitamber Behera and home guards Pramod Sahoo and Prakash Dehuri were arrested for their involvement in the case. The police also seized the commander jeep used in carrying Makhnu’s body into the jungle.
However, two other accused in the case – a lady constable Gita Bhoi and home guard Jhasaketan Mahananda – are still on the run. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the duo.
According to reports, a case was registered against Makhnu’s elder son Raju in last June. Failing to arrest Raju, police picked up innocent Makhnu from his home July 17. Since then he was missing. Though the police said Makhnu was released from the custody, DNA test of the skeletal remains seized from Metakani forest September 24 revealed that those were that of Makhnu’s.
