Cuttack, March 10: A workshop to discuss ways to fight the menace of witch-hunting was organised here Tuesday.
Social activists and police officials from across the state participated in the workshop, which aimed at ways to deal with the challenge.
According to sources, as many as 11 districts in the state are affected by the menace of witch-hunting. Mayurbhanj tops the list with the most number of cases of witch-hunting, where women are accused of being witches and often get killed. The workshop was chaired by Crime Branch additional director general of police Bijay Kumar Sharma.
Addressing the gathering, Sharma said, “The workshop is meant to sensitise concerned officials and social activists about the ways to tackle witch-hunting cases.” According to a participant, the main challenge before the police as well as the NGOs working in field is to ensure that action taken against the culprits does not come into conflict with the traditional beliefs of the people.
The speakers opined that the best way to deal with the menace is to spread awareness and educate people on keeping away from superstitions.
