Puri : The district administration has identified 35 unsafe buildings in the Pilgrim City here after conducting a recent survey in this regard.
The administration had made a survey to ascertain the status of several old buildings in the city to prevent mishaps during the upcoming Rath Yatra.
A committee led by sub-collector Madhusudan Das inspected several old buildings and submitted a report to the administration.
“We have identified 35 unsafe buildings in the city. Notices will be served on the owners of these buildings to demolish the structures in decrepit condition,” Das said.
According to Das, the administration will take steps to seal the unsafe buildings if their owners fail to comply with the order.
Sources said the buildings of at least 15 mutts, including those of Raghab Das mutt, Shankaranand mutt, Hati Akhada mutt and Languli mutt, have been declared unsafe by the administration.
“We have identified the buildings of a few lodgings and that of Annapurna theatre as unsafe. Steps are being taken to prevent devotees from using these weak structures during the upcoming Car Festival,” said an official of the district administration.
At least four persons had died when a dilapidated structure at Daita Sahi collapsed in 2013. Soon after the incident, the administration had constituted a committee to identify all unsafe buildings in the city.
The committee used to conduct a survey to identify unsafe buildings ahead of the annual of Rath Yatra, sources said.
