Balasore: A group of eunuchs played Good Samaritans for an HCV-infected three-year-old thalassemic girl at Paduanpada in Balasore by extracting a promise of help for her from the chief district medical officer (CDMO) Friday.
Though a month has passed after a reputed laboratory confirmed that the girl was transfused hepatitis infected blood at the blood bank of the district headquarters hospital, the administration has not reached out to the girl and her family with any assistance.
Upset over the apathy, over 50 eunuchs affiliated to Loknath Kinnar Sangh and family members of the girl staged a dharna on the premises of the district headquarters hospital Friday. Tempers ran high on the premises during the protest. CDMO Dr Bhawani Shankar Pani was going outside in his car, but the eunuchs blocked his path by lying on the road.
Town police IIC Dillip Kumar Sahu pacified the agitators. In the afternoon, the eunuchs and family of the girl held talks with the CDMO. They relented after the CDMO assured them that the district administration will bear the medical expenses of the victim.
According to reports, sympathising with the worry-ridden family, the eunuchs had gifted a new dress to the girl and fed her sweets as a mark of Eid celebrations Thursday. They had vowed to take up the issue with the administration by staging protests. PNN
