After cyclone Tauktae, another cyclonic storm Yaas likely to make landfall

Bhubaneswar: After the devastation caused by cyclone Tauktae, the weather department has warned of another cyclonic storm that is likely to hit the advance over the Bay of Bengal.

A low pressure is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal around May 22, 2021, informed Bhubaneswar regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its mid-day bulletin Wednesday.

“Southwest monsoon is likely to advance into South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 21, 2021,” it added.

The IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra alerted that the cyclone might hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal May 26. The low pressure which is likely to develop will intensify during the subsequent 72 hours and turn into a cyclonic storm by May 25.

“As per the present trend, if the system turns into a cyclone, it is likely to move in north-westward direction and make landfall between Odisha and West Bengal coast in the morning,” Mohapatra added.

Weather forecast and warning for Odisha districts for the next five days starting May 19, 2021 (Wednesday):

Day 1 (valid from 1330 hrs IST of 19.05.2021 up to 0830 hrs IST of 20.05.2021) –

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Boudh, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Jharsuguda and dry weather likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (to be updated) – Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Koraput, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.

Day 2 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 20.05.2021 up to 0830 hrs IST of 21.05.2021) –

Light to moderate rain or thunder shower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (to be updated) – Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Subarnapur, Boudh and Kandhamal.

Day 3 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 21.05.2021 up to 0830 hrs IST of 22.05.2021) –

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (to be updated) – Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur.

Day 4 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 22.05.2021 up to 0830 hrs IST of 23.05.2021) –

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and dry weather very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Day 5 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 23.05.2021 up to 0830 hrs IST of 24.05.2021) –

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati and dry weather very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

However, there are no Yellow Warnings for the Day 4 and 5.
