Bantala: Tension gripped Dhakuta village near here in Angul district Sunday and hundreds of locals picketed the police station, demanding the arrest of the mother-in-law of a young woman who was allegedly killed over dowry demands Friday.
Angry villagers and relatives of the deceased gheraoed the police station and warned of intensifying the agitation if steps were not taken to arrest the mother-in-law. The deceased was Priyanka Dehuri, wife of Narendra Dehuri.
Priyanka was married to Narendra and “all dowry demands had been met during the marriage”. However, Narendra along with his family members allegedly inflicted mental and physical torture on Priyanka, demanding more dowry.
When Priyanka and her parents expressed their inability to meet the fresh demands, the husband and the other in-laws allegedly assaulted her and forced her to leave her house. Priyanka was found dead in the house under mysterious circumstances Friday.
Failing to get a satisfactory answer from Priyanka’s in-laws about the death, her parents suspect she was done to death. Based on their complaint, police arrested Narendra, his father Duryodhana Dehuri and brother Birendra Dehuri. Duryodhana and Birendra were allowed to go after interrogation while Narendra was arrested and a court remanded him to judicial custody.
Priyanka’s family members weren’t satisfied as the police did not arrest her mother-in-law who they suspect was the main instigator.
