Bantala, June 1: An ailing female elephant that was battling for life inside Satkosia sanctuary in Angul district succumbed to its illness, while in another incident a woman was trampled to death by a jumbo at Kandhakoili under Duragapur forest range in the same district Thursday.
The female elephant died despite veterinarians and forest officials making all efforts to revive it.
ACF Subhendu Behera, ranger Brajabandhu Pattnaik, SDVO Dr Pradipta Kumar Panigrahi and veterinarian Dr Santosh Kumar Swain reached the spot. The carcass was buried in the forest after post-mortem.
The post-mortem report suggested the elephant had not eaten anything for the last five days after being affected by heatstroke and diarrhoea.
In the second incident, Nuhurani Pradhan, 50, of Bimalbeda village under Jarpada police limits was trampled to death by an elephant at a mango orchard in Kandhakoli village.
She had been to Kandhakoli to look after her mango farm. The elephant attacked her while she was collecting mangoes.
After reports surfaced, hundreds of villagers rushed to the spot and staged an agitation demanding compensation to the bereaved family.
They relented after Durgapur ranger Alok Kumar Das and Purunakote IIC gave away Rs 10,000 as assistance for performing the last rites of the deceased and promised to provide compensation as per norms after completion of necessary formalities.
The body was sent for post-mortem and a case was registered in this connection.
