Living room decoration is one of the central features of interior design and plays a pivotal role in enhancing the beauty of interior spaces. While antique centre tables stand out on their own, modern-day tables too are no less eye-catching.
Be it any special family or festive occasion, we try our best to embellish interior spaces. It often happens that we search out quick and easy ways to ‘do up’ our homes, partly to express our innate aesthetic sense and partly to impress guests.
Shruti Mukim, a city-based interior designer, dwells on the popularity of tablescapes and shares tips on how to be a good host.
She says tablescapes are a great way to create an interesting vignette that reflects the host’s aesthetic sensibility or a particular theme of a party one may be hosting. Tablescapes for particular festive occasions are a rage.
“The centre table is the cynosure of all eyes. It bespeaks the taste and style of the host. For a fabulous look, group a number of transparent glasses and fill them with dry flowers. One can even place a decorative fruit boat with some greens and succulents thrown in. Besides, you can opt for decorative pieces like candle stands, small potted plants, trivets with candles or metallic balls which can be used individually or in groups depending upon the look you want to create. The idea is not to overdo the design but to keep it simple and classy,” says Mukim.

Lighty affair
A thin mirror cutout in the centre of the table as a base for candles and crystal tea lights is the most attractive and sure way to add another dimension to any table setting.

Scented candles
A candle centrepiece has a calm and soothing effect and lends a soft glow to a centre table setting. From scented candles to floating ones, they make elegant decorative pieces, especially when combined with flowers. You can tie them with ribbons and place them in bowls or glass vases to add warmth to your centre table décor. Light up the evening.

Fresh flowers
Fresh flowers always win hands down when it comes to decorating any space or furniture. Flowers sit best on a centre table in an elegant crystal vase or a flower bowl. Add your personal touch by placing them in coffee cups or empty tin cans and mason jars. They do justice to almost any container. They also complement your walls and are in harmony with the
surroundings.

Rich colour palette
Be creative. Use deep red pomegranates with rose petals in martini glasses. Pomegranates signify growth and prosperity. If it’s a soiree, opt for a deep burgundy table cover, beige and gold dinnerware, crystal glassware, reflective accent pieces and a dash of sparkle with metallic woven tablemats.

Dramatic background
Add drama by creating a backdrop with a metal trellis screen accentuated with votive holders and flower garlands or a flower chandelier above the dinner table.

Go for gold
Gold is the go to colour for tabletops this season. Fabrics like natural linen mixed with silk, jacquards and organza have visual appeal. Personalise the tablescape by using pictures of family holidays and memorabilia collected during travel.
