Bhanjanagar, Dec 13: Even though the state government has launched several schemes for institutional delivery to ensure of safety of a mother and her child, pregnant women are deprived of this service thanks to negative attitude of ambulance staff and healthcare employees.
In a recent case, an 102 ambulance driver dumped a pregnant woman midway on her way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital even though the patient was in critical condition. Before that, the woman had moved three hospitals with severe labour pain and faced negligence in treatment.
The woman belonging to Malaspadar village under Bhanjanagar block in Ganjam district developed severe labour pain Saturday morning when her family members rushed her to a hospital at Jagannathprasad. The doctors in the hospital did not attend her properly and she had to bear the pain for five hours.
When labour pain increased, she was referred to Bhanjanagar hospital. The family members took her to the hospital in an ambulance. In Bhanjanagar hospital, the doctors referred her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur mentioning that her condition was critical.
She was being shifted to MKCG in the same ambulance. However, the driver mid-way told her family that he could not take them to MKCG as he has to attend an urgent call. When the driver left with the vehicle, her family members took her to a private nursing home nearby as per the advice of passersby.
But the nursing home staff did not open the main gate despite their pleas. Finding no other option, the family members rushed her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in a rented vehicle by arranging money for it. They reached the hospital at 10.30 pm.
At around 2 am Sunday, the woman delivered a baby through a Cesarean section. The woman and the baby are fine, according to the hospital sources.
The family members demanded that the concerned authorities look into the matter.
