Bhubaneswar, March 1: AMRI Hospitals here organised a live workshop Sunday to showcase interventional treatment of a complex heart disease in a programme aimed at imparting knowledge on various heart diseases and their treatment.
The procedure was done by Delhi-based cardiac surgeon Dr DS Gambhir in the presence of consultant interventional cardiologists of AMRI Hospitals Dr Lingaraj Nath and Dr Mahesh Agarwal.
The live workshop involved percutaneous coronary intervention techniques with stents on a patient suffering from left main disease, which occurs when coronary arteries become narrow or are blocked as a result of a build-up of fatty deposits and plaque on the inner walls. This results in restriction of blood flow to the heart.
“The stent has been done on a 67-year-old male patient. If the left main artery stenting is not done, the patient might have to go through an open heart surgery, which invites a lot of pain and anxiety,” said Salil Mohanty, vice-president AMRI Hospitals here.
“The idea behind the programme was to impart knowledge on the best technical and procedural skills to tackle complex cardiac problems that could be adopted while treating cardiac patients. Dr Gambhir is an eminent cardiac surgeon and we are fortunate to have him here. We hope that the people who are here, as well as the eminent doctors, will benefit by this programme,” said Mohanty.
The workshop emphasized on the new approaches and operative techniques for heart attacks, diabetes and the burden of heart disease.
“Heart disease in the state is rising rapidly and has started affecting a very large section of the population aged between 45 and 50 years. In this context, the live cardiology programme endeavors to initiate discourses on advanced treatment of coronary artery disease,” said Dr Nath.
