New Delhi: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP from Cuttack Bhartruhari Mahtab Monday urged the Union government to approve projects under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) for improvement of storm water drainage system in Cuttack.
The BJD MP raised the issue under Rule 377 in Lok Sabha. He said that the state government had submitted a project proposal of Rs 3,700 crore for development of storm water drainage systems in AMRUT cities. However, they are yet to be approved.
Mahtab informed the House that a large number of drainage systems in many urban areas of the state have collapsed resulting in flooding.
“This can be seen during rainy season in major cities like Cuttack, Puri and Bhubaneswar,” he said.
Significantly, the Union government has launched AMRUT scheme with the aim of providing basic amenities like water supply, sewerage, parks and urban transport facilities to improve the quality of life especially for the poor and the disadvantaged.
Mahtab said proper disposal of surplus rainwater is essential to tackle waterlogging problems and keeping in view the projected rate of urbanisation, a 50-year planning has been done.
He urged the Centre to approve the projects under AMRUT scheme for the improvement of stormwater drainage systems in Cuttack and other urban areas of the state.
