Rasgobindpur, May 27: A youth and an ox were killed Thursday when they came in contact with high tension wires that snapped due to hailstorm in Raisola village under this block of Mayurbhanj district.
Blaming the staff of the electricity distribution company responsible for the casualties, scores of locals rushed out onto the Rasgobindpur-Amarda road Thursday, clamoring for immediate compensation. Vehicular movement was disrupted on the route for hours due to protest.
Following hailstorm in the area, 11 KV wires had snapped and were lying on the road near Raisola. Local people had intimated the matter to the electricity staff early in the morning. However, no step was taken to cut the power supply to the snapped transmission lines.
Pithi Gudu, a resident of Raisola, was tending his ox on the road. As ill luck would have it, they came in contact with the live wires and died on the spot.
Locals also alleged that due to carelessness of the electricity distribution company, two casualties happened.
On being informed, inspector in-charge (IIC) Niranjan Das along with assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Pratibha Gappo, block development officer (BDO) Prasanna Kumar Patra, tehsildar Ashok Kumar Panda, assistant engineer of the local electricity division Sujit Kumar Rath rushed to the spot and held
discussion with agitating people.
The administration announced ` 15,000 from Red Cross fund, `2000 under Harischandra Yojana, and a pucca house for his widow, and widow pension.
BJP’s district unit president also offered `2000 to the wife of the deceased. The road blockade that started around 11.00 am ended at 3 pm. Locals police seized the body and sent it for post mortem. A case of unnatural death has been registered at the local police station.
