Bhubaneswar: The state government has achieved success in anti-Maoist operations in 2015, director general of police (DGP) KB Singh said here Wednesday.
“We reviewed the Maoist activities inside the state and areas on the inter-state borders. Our performance in 2015 was very good,” Singh said after a meeting on activities to curb of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) held under the chairmanship of home secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy at the secretariat. Naxals are desperate now and their morale is low, Singh said. “They want to harass innocent villagers as they have lost their support base in the state. That is why they are killing innocent tribals,” he said. Senior police officers have chalked out a plan to tackle the Maoist menace in 2016, according to sources.
The officers also decided to intensify the ongoing combing operations against the Maoists.
The meeting at which the director of intelligence and IG operations were also present came in the wake of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently expressing concern over Maoist activity.
“Left wing extremism continues to be a major concern for the state. Though we have been able to contain the menace to the areas boarding our neighbouring states, the recent movement and activities of Maoist cadre in the districts of Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Boudh is worrisome,” the Chief Minister had said a few days ago at a senior police officers conference here.
“There is no reason why the police leadership cannot counter the inroads made by Maoists into central Orissa. I exhort the SPs and senior officials in the headquarters to fight the menace with renewed enthusiasm and commitment backed by meticulous planning,” the Chief Minister had said.
