Puri, February 22: Renwoned filmmaker/photographer Sudharshan Juyal came down from Dehradun to conduct a workshop on still photography and guide the budding filmmakers and photographers in still photography during the BYOFF event in Puri.
Sudharshan’s workshop basically focused on the modern technology and its implications on photography. “Technological advancements are now taking place very rapidly. Within weeks some new kind of technology is bombarding the market. Youths now are too much into this business. The youths of these days are well versed with the different technologies, which we could not think in our wildest dreams. However, these technologies have also had a negative impact on the youths. Youths have now lost contact with the real world,” Sudharshan told
Orissa Post.
The renowned alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and the National School of Drama (NSD), during his workshop, reminded the audience of the years in 70s and 80s when photographers had to struggle with negatives to get their work done. “We had minimum resources at our time to pursue our passion. Each camera roll had 36 negatives. We used to print pictures on small test papers to find out which quality of paper will be used for which photos. Many friends collected money to print pictures. 30 years down the line, drastic changes have taken place from the technological viewpoint.”
Sudharshan however, warns that excessive use of technology can harm creativity. “These days a heap of software and fancy advanced cameras are there in the market. But people should not always get inclined to the technology.
“They need to live in a physical world. A good aspiring photographer should always live in and feel the real world. They should travel, read more, see painting and art exhibitions. The collective effect of these is potent enough to make you a great photographer,” he said.
He said that our creativity and art lie beyond fancy cameras and software. The after-camera work really differentiates a great from an average photographer.
Sudharshan is a trained actor and filmmaker. He often holds workshops on photography for kids and working professionals.
