Artisan workshop at NIFT

Bhubaneswar:The textile design wing of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), organised an Artisan Awareness Workshop in collaboration with the Textiles Ministry at NIFT premises Tuesday Sharing some of his experiences and work ethics with the artisans and students, national awardee weaver Bhikari Meher inaugurated the four-day workshop. It was aimed at contemporising traditional weaving and connecting the weavers of Orissa with the mainstream high-end market at the national and inter national level. Artisans from Nuapatna and Bargarh handloom cluster who are part of the workshop showcased their products which are being analysed from the target market’s perspective. “In a way, the workshop has given a wonderful learning opportunity to young students of NIFT about the process, art and artisans related to handloom sector,’’ said Meher. NIFT official Binay Bhushan Jena said the “innovative workshop will provide an opportunity to interact with multiple experts to gain and share their issues related to raw material, design, product, market and promotions”. An awareness programme was conducted on the inaugural day with an introductory note by textile design department centre coordinator Sandeep Kidile. Assistant professor Goutam Bar and associate professor Goutam Saha were present on the occasion. NIFT director Sanjay Srivastava coordinated the event.
