Guwahati: Tarun Gogoi, Assam’s longest-serving, passed away Monday evening after his health condition deteriorated. He was 84. Tarun Gogoi was undergoing treatment admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital here. He was first admitted to the hospital August 25 after testing positive for COVID-19. He spent two months at the hospital before being released.
The former Assam chief minister was readmitted again to the hospital November 2 after he complained of breathlessness. He also developed post-COVID complications.
The report of Gogoi’s demise came hours after present Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted that he was flying back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh to visit the veteran Congress leader. “Flying back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh after cancelling my programmes midway to be on the side of respected Tarun Gogoi da & his family as the former CM’s health deteriorates. He has always been a father figure to me,” Sonowal wrote on the microblogging site.
Gogoi suffered multiple organ failure and Sunday. Doctors performed dialysis on him as he was unable to pass urine naturally due to kidney problem. However, all their efforts to save Gogoi failed.
