Kalyansinghpur: A pregnant woman in the throes of childbirth died along with her unborn baby at Ghagudimal village in Rayagada district Monday while being taken on a cot to a local community health centre, as no ambulance could reach the remote village due to lack of an approachable road, said locals.
Dhanya (40) could have survived had an ambulance reached here, said her husband Biranchi Hanshvansh struggling to control his tears.
”Dhanya experienced intense labour pain in the morning and needed immediate medical care. Left with no option, we requested some villagers to help us take her to the hospital. We put her on a cot and carried it on our shoulders to wade through three km of knee-deep mud to reach Parsali-Kalyanshingpur road,” said Dhanya’s husband.
“Somehow we managed to reach a bridge on Giriaguda nullah with a lot of struggle. A 102 ambulance arrived at the bridge and took us to Kalyansinghpur CHC. At the hospital, it was learnt that Dhanya was suffering from anaemia and her expected date of delivery was December 9. But we had to rush her to the hospital after she experienced swelling all over her body.
Her condition might have worsened as she was taken on a cot for 3 km, the doctor suspected. The attending doctors referred the case to the district headquarters hospital. Dhanya’s condition further deteriorated at Shikarpai when she was being shifted to the DHH in an ambulance.
Somehow we managed to call the doctor from a nearby health centre to see her condition but the latter declared her dead,” Biranchi said.
The body was brought to Giriaguda Chhak in the same ambulance from where the relatives carried her on their shoulders again to reach the village.
Villagers demanded immediate provision of a hearse at the CHC. PNN
