Cuttack : The Orissa High Court Friday granted conditional bail to Tapan Shah, one of the accused in the abduction of former Malkangiri collector Vineel Krishna in 2011.
A division bench of Justices Indrajit Mohanti and Biswajit Mohanty ruled that the lower court can set the conditions for Shah’s bail.
Shah, who was arrested by Chitrakonda police in connection with the abduction and confinement of Krishna, had challenged the lower court’s verdict in the HC
seeking bail.
The lower court had sentenced Shah, a former gram rojgar sevak of Janabai village under Chitrakonda police limits, and woman Maoist Divya Kukei to life imprisonment May 24 last.
According to sources, Krishna along with junior engineer Pabitra Mohan Majhi had visited remote areas of Chitrakonda February 16, 2011 when they were reportedly kidnapped by the Maoists.
The issue had created furore in the state following which Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had requested the extremists to release the duo. Although the ultras had released Majhi within hours of his abduction, they detained Krishna for nine days.
