Bamboo bridge on verge of collapse serves as lifeline

Mahakalapara: A narrow and reasonably long bamboo bridge set up across a distributary of river Gobari near the border of Kansarabadadandua and Suniti panchayats in this block of Kendrapara district has posed severe threat to the lives of commuters.

The bridge is in a collapsing stage after it was hit by a two-ft high tide.

People of Suniti panchayat and several villages of Kansarabadadandua panchayat including Bagagahana, Pankapal, Tarapada, Badadandua, Radia, Kansar are dependent on this bamboo bridge to visit the block headquarters.

This bridge also establishes a link between the people of Kansarabadadandua panchayat and Jagarijor Hat, Benakanda, Jamboo, Rajnagar areas and Tantiapal marine police station. Many people cross the nullah with their motorcycles.

But the low pressure-triggered incessant rain of the last week brought high waves and the bridge suffered significant damage.

At present, the people are afraid of crossing the nullah using the bridge as it can collapse any time, said locals.

Though a concrete bridge by the works department is under construction across the nullah to connect Jamboo and Suniti panchayats with the block and district headquarters, the snail’s pace of construction has irked many.

Locals urged the administration to expedite the project at the earliest in interests of hundreds of people.
