Puri: In a tough stand taken by the district administration that is expected to maintain the ambience and religious atmosphere in and around Srimandir, the playing of DJ (Disc Jockey) music near the 12th century shrine has been banned.
DJ music and the associated sound waves that spread around the place from where they emanate are usually heard in parties, ceremonies, festivals and events and hence seem to be an assault on the pristine atmosphere that prevails near religious places of worship.
“The sound waves of DJ music may harm the temple structure. The ban order will be strictly imposed from December 22,” said sub-collector Madhusudan Das, after chairing a high-level meeting on the issue recently.
The administration has also banned DJ music in the Subhas Bose Square and Acharya Harihar Square areas to check sound pollution in the Pilgrim City.
“No one will be allowed to play DJ music beyond the 60 decibel limits in any locality in the city. We have asked police to seize DJ music equipment and take action against their owners whenever and wherever there is a violation of the sound pollution norms,” said the sub-collector.
On the other hand, in a bid to take care of the architecture of Srimandir, the temple’s technical committee has asked the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) to install stainless steel beams at the Beheran gate of the shrine as part of a renovation drive.
Members of the temple technical committee have emphasized the installation of steel beams at the Beheran gate after examining some dilapidated structures in the shrine premises recently.
The ASI, state Public Works department and the SJTA had earlier installed stainless steel frames at temple Jagamohan to strengthen it.
Sources said that technical committee members Gopal Chandra Mitra, Dharmapada Mishra, Padmolochan Mahapatra and NC Pal examined the status of the Beheran gate, the Jay-Bijay gate and the Natamandap Wednesday. Srimandir superintending engineer Bindheswar Patra and a few senior ASI officials were present during the inspection.
The ASI had informed the Orissa High Court November 15 that it would mend cracks on a few beams at the Natamandap within a month.
