Bhubaneswar, August 19: Number of complaints relating to banking sector during last fiscal rose 63.4 per cent in the state over the same period of previous fiscal, a top official of banking ombudsman office said. “Number of complaints has increased by 63.4 per cent during the last fiscal. Total number of complaints received during this period increased to 2,448 from 1,498 received in FY14,”Chief General Manager of Reserve Bank of India and Banking Ombudsman (Orissa), BK Mishra said.
He also said that the number of complaints has increased due to creation of awareness among the general public through various campaigns like town hall meetings, and TV advertisements among others,” he added. As per the ombudsman, number of complaints received from urban areas during last fiscal stood at 36.4 per cent followed by rural areas which were at 35.8 per cent. Complaints from semi-urban areas were at 24.6 per cent and metropolitan areas at 3.2 per cent, he added.
“Share of complaints received from rural areas increased by about 10 per cent, which was due to various awareness programmes conducted in rural areas of the state,” Mishra said adding that complaints received through electronic mode declined to 25.2 per cent last fiscal against 33.4 per cent in FY14. On share of complaints received by different categories of banks, Deputy General Manager of RBI and Secretary of Banking Ombudsman, Asish Ranjan Samal said, “Public sector banks except Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) accounted for about 80 per cent of the total complaints received during the last fiscal. Private sector banks accounted for about 12 per cent with RRBs at about 6 per cent and foreign banks at 1 per cent.” He also said, “There is a declining trend in complaints relating to credit, debit and ATM cards along with loan-related issues.” On disposal of complaints, Mishra said the Ombudsman disposed about 99.8 per cent of the complaints in FY15 against 99.1 per cent in FY14.
