Berhampur: With unrest over the cancellation of nomination papers of an aspiring candidate in the upcoming student union polls, authorities of Berhampur University have declared ‘Sine Die’ and have reportedly asked the inmates to vacate the hostels by 10 am Saturday.
The incident occurred when one Ajit Swain’s nomination papers were rejected. Students took to the streets and turned violent as they allegedly ransacked property inside PG council chairman’s office and also picketed in front of Vice Chancellor’s residence.
Professor Kali Charan Sahu said, “After the backlash from students’ union, the election committee had a discussion with the Vice Chancellor and the PG council, and came to the decision that polls will be cancelled. The situation is slowly becoming uncontrollable so it will be safer to cancel the elections.”
Meanwhile, students have showed discontent over the news and have said that the protests will gain momentum if the ‘sine die’ is not called off.
Additional SP Shantanu Das also informed that police personnel are keeping a watch on the situation and necessary steps will be taken if the situation goes out of hand.
On the other hand, People’s College at Buguda in Ganjam district was closed sine die Saturday following unrest on the campus. The authorities were forced to close the college following resentment among a group of students after the students’ union election was cancelled.
The election was cancelled following a clash between two groups of students.
