New Delhi: Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJD) has been chosen for the Best Parliamentarian award for 2017.
The MP has been chosen by the Indian Parliamentary Group for his outstanding skills shown in the Lok Sabha during debates, in depth knowledge of issues and rules.
The decision to confer the award on him was taken by the committee comprising Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien and other veteran leaders from both the Houses of the Parliament.
The list of awardees for the past few years has also been announced. Senior Congress leader in the Upper House Ghulam Nabi Azad has been chosen for 2015 while senior Trinamool Congress leader Dinesh Trivedi will receive the award for 2016.
The awards were instituted in 1995 and past recipients include former prime ministers Chandra Shekhar and Manmohan Singh, former president Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and BJP leader Advani.
