London: Manchester City and Liverpool thrashed their respective opponents while Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at the Old Trafford in different matches of the Premier League, Saturday. Hence, Jose Mourinho’s side dropped points for a second successive Premier League home match.
Former Man U coach Alex Ferguson was at the Old Trafford for the first time since recovering from brain hemorrhage, but it turned out to be a disappointing day for him as well as for the fans.
New Brazilian signing Fred put the Red Devils ahead in the 18th minute, finding the bottom-left corner from 20 yards after Paul Pogba’s clever disguised pass. Wolves deservedly restored parity just after the interval when Jimenez teed up Joao Moutinho (53rd minute) on the edge of the box and the latter found the top-left corner.
Meanwhile at Cardiff City, Manchester City spanked the hosts 5-0, riding on a brace by Riyad Mahrez (67th and 89th). Sergio Aguero, the leading goal scorer for the club, scored on his 300th appearance for the Sky Blues and put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute.
Bernardo Silva doubled the lead three minutes later before Ilkay Gundogan put Pep Guardiola’s team 3-0 up at the break. After the change of ends, Mahrez struck twice to hand the champions an easy win.
In the other game, Liverpool continued their winning run with a 3-0 victory over Southampton. Jurgen Klopp’s men took the lead when Xherdan Shaqiri’s shot deflected in off Wesley Hoedt in the 10th minute.
Joel Matip then doubled the lead in the 21st minute. Just before the interval, Mohamed Salah put Reds 3-0 up, tapping in after Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick hit the woodwork. However, center-back Virgil van Dijk’s injury after the break marred the win for Klopp.
