Bhubaneswar, June 5: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched three green chariots Friday to mark the World Environment Day and essayed to spread awareness on sanitation and environment.
Deputy Mayor K Shanti, who flagged off the vehicles, said the processions being led by the chariots will go to all 67 BMC wards, educating people about sanitation and on the need to prohibit use of polythene bags.
BMC officials also explained the objective of educating the public about the re-use and re-cycling of the plastic.
Muralidharan Nair, an official with the Ramky, said, the vehicles would tour across the BMC wards, educating the public about safe disposal of garbage.
The success of a waste management system in city rests on the idea of segregating the waste at the source level itself, and separating it into degradable and bio-degradable waste, he added.
The green chariots were enabled with loud speakers to spread the message to people in all localities on the idea of re-use and recycling of plastic waste.
On an average, the city generates about 350 grams of waste per individual every day, said the official, adding, fifteen wards have been assigned to Ramky alone, which collects 100 tonne of waste daily. The agency finally sends the waste to the Joint temporary Transfer stations jointly managed by three sanitary companies – Ramky, Jagruti and PMR. The decorated green chariots provided by the private agencies moved round the city carrying posters and banners focusing on the state government ban on plastic bags.
