Bhubaneswar, April 3: The government has authorised Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to empower its recovery officer with authority to slap certificate cases on tax evaders to increase its revenue base.
However, BMC is yet to work out the modalities so that a deputy rank officer posted as recovery officer can impose certificate cases on persons evading holding taxes. Once the hurdles are resolved, BMC would create post of a special certificate officer (SCO) for the purpose.
“We would soon depute an SCO so that certificate cases can be slapped effectively on commercial and residential establishments in the city,” BMC additional commissioner D Brundha said.
Besides, BMC has for the first time broken previous fiscal’s (2013-14) record of holding taxes of `20 crore and is likely to post revenue collection of approximately `23-24 crore. “Revenue collection process is still under way because of which we can’t give exact figures of 2014-15 fiscal’s holding tax collection,” an officer said.
BMC commissioner Krishan Kumar recently told media that major commercial and residential tax defaulters would not be spared this time as an SCO would be posted in BMC. “The tax evaders would be responsible for clearing their dues so that BMC’s revenue base can be expanded,” Kumar recently told this paper.
Notably, BMC displayed names of 208 tax evaders on billboards across the city after which 30 per cent people have deposited their dues.
