Bhubaneswar: If everything proceeds as per expectations, the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) will soon start international operations to Bangkok.
Currently, the city airport is getting good response with regard to international operations. However, at present, Air Asia is the only airline offering direct international flights from BPIA. Significantly, Air Asia that started international operations to Kuala Lumpur April this year is also getting good response from the state.
Incidentally, the passenger traffic at the city airport has grown at a rate of 23.11 percent in the past one year whereas the cargo traffic has increased at a rate 19.10 percent. According to sources, the BPIA officials are in talks with some major airlines for international operations and two airlines-Air Asia and Air India – have already expressed their interest for starting operations to Bangkok.
“Currently, things are in the preliminary stage and nothing has been finalized. But we are confident of having more international operations soon,” said a top official of BPIA.
Sources informed Orissa POST that Air India’s Bangkok flight from Bhubaneswar would be through Gaya (Bihar).
“We are expecting the Air India flight to get scheduled in the morning. Other airlines have also approached for international operations. The BPIA will have more international operations before February next year,” said a top official of Airports Authority of India.
