Rourkela, March 6: Sunrise Sports Club (SSC) emerged champions in the All India Biju Patnaik football tournament after scraping past Kakurgachi Athletic Association (KAA), Kolkata 4-3 in the keenly-contested final at the Ispat Stadium here, Sunday.
The match ended goalless in stipulated time. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, SSC converted four of their five chances, while KAA could score only thrice.
RSP executive director Prabhat Kumar Pradhan was present as the chief guest and distributed the prizes. The champion team bagged a cash prize of `50,000 and a glittering trophy. The losing side took home `30,000 along with the runners-up trophy.
Cricket tourney
Mukteswar Cricket Club (MCC) will organise the NM Bhuyan Memorial All Orissa cricket tournament at the BJB College Ground in Bhubaneswar, March 10-20. Altogether 10 teams will participate in the 40 overs format tournamemt, which carries a total prize purse of `1,00,000.
Saheed Sporting will lock horns with Rameswar Sporting in the inaugural match. The final match will be played March 20. “Almost all the top cricketers of the state will participate in the tournament. It’s a prestigious event and they are all eager to play in it,” stated MCC secretary Prasanta Mohapatra in a press conference at Bhubaneswar, Sunday.
“We have made some special arrangements to counter the heat. We have arranged an ambulance and a doctor and physio will always be present during games. There will be four drink sessions instead of the usual two and the players will be served coconut water,” he added.
“This year we delayed the tournament because of the ongoing Kalahandi Cup. We wanted to ensure the participation of all the top players,” said vice-president, Gurjit Singh Chouhan.
Kishore Club in semis
Kishore Club made it to the semifinals of the Tata Utkalika Cup football tournament after edging past SAI Hostel, Cuttack 2-1 in the inaugural match at the Unit-VI High School Ground in Bhubaneswar, Sunday. Sanjit Panna (58th) and Narayan Murmu (78th) scored for Kishore Club, while Saswat Swain (47th) got one back for SAI.
Football tourney
Cuttack District Athletic Association (CDAA) will organise a football tournament at Cuttack, March last week. “Eight different teams from the city will participate in this U-14 tournament,” CDAA stated in a press release Sunday.
