Narsinghpur, Feb 5: A woman Wednesday was killed by her brother-in-law following a tiff over sharing of harvested paddy crops in Purunagaon village under the police limits in Cuttack district, police said Thursday.
The victim was identified as Gouri Khatua (33), wife of Trinath Khatua in the village. Accused Lokanath Khatua (40) is absconding after the incident. Police sent the body for post-mortem and started an investigation. The incident has triggered shockwaves in the region.
IIC Harmohan Nayak said Trinath is employed as a driver in a Jharsuguda-based
company and stayed in Boinda of Angul district, while his younger brother Lokanath was staying in the village. His wife Gouri along with two kids had come home a month ago to oversee harvesting work.
The incident occurred after Gouri and Lokanath had a fight Wednesday evening over sharing of harvested crops. Enraged Lokanath picked up crowbar and gave a sharp blow to Gouri in front of her daughter. Gouri died on the spot.
Later, he locked up the body in the kitchen and called an auto-rickshaw and left for Boinda at night with his niece. There, he left the little girl with Trinath, stating that she has fallen sick and absconded. Trinath grew suspicious and came to know about his wife’s murder from his daughter. He
immediately left for his village and found his wife dead and lodged a complaint with the
police station.
